- Ageing gas mains to be replaced in Savile Street East, Sheffield
- Road and lane closures needed to safeguard staff and road-users
- New pipes will keep gas flowing to local homes and businesses for decades to come
September marks the start of an 11-week project to upgrade gas pipes in the Burngreave area of Sheffield and keep residents and businesses warm and safe for this winter and many more to come.
Local gas network Cadent will be renewing 900 metres of gas mains in Sutherland Street and Savile Street East. Work starts on Monday 3 September.
Cadent will be replacing the ageing metal gas mains with tough new plastic pipes the size of a car tyre that will last at least 80 years. The new pipes will ensure local people continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating until the end of the century.
The work will be carried out in phases. During the first phase Sutherland Street will be closed to traffic. A diversion route will be clearly signed.
During the second and third phases, the outside lane of Savile Street East, heading north east, will be closed between the junction of Sutherland Street and Carwood Road.
Cadent Authorising Engineer Paul Martin said: “The existing gas mains are ageing so we are investing in new gas pipes to keep local homes warm and local businesses thriving for many years to come.
“There will be some short-term disruption but once we’ve installed the new pipes we won’t need to come back and renew them until at least the end of the century. We will make every effort to complete this important work as soon as possible.”
It may be necessary to temporarily disconnect people’s gas supplies for short periods while their gas service pipes (the pipes that take gas from the main in the road to their homes or businesses) are replaced. Anyone who is affected will be contacted beforehand.
