Celebrating the first anniversary of industry Skills Strategy #2020skills

working for us

Our industry needs to recruit 221,000 people by 2027 to ensure a sustainable and resilient workforce.

These new recruits will need more advanced technical skills, as the UK moves towards a smart energy system.

A year ago, Cadent joined with 28 other leading organisations in the energy and utilities sector to launch a skills strategy. It sets out how we’ll rise to the challenge.

Here's some highlights from our contribution so far:

Recruiting every year 80 entry-level roles into our business (apprentices, trainees and graduates) and re-skilling 40 more experienced recruits too.

35,000 training days each year, to upskill and maintain a competent workforce.

Ofsted rated our advanced apprenticeship schemes OUTSTANDING; we also have City & Guild approved training centres.

Our ‘employability’ programme for people with special educational needs recorded 70% conversion into employment (the national average is 7%).

Working up plans to extend our education outreach in 2018/19 with a work experience programme that engages candidates from the Social Mobility Foundation – Aspiring Professionals programme.

Exploring ways to engage with the Talent Source Network and the Skills Accord, programmes run by the Energy and Utility Skills partnership.

Cadent

Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy.  We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change.  Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency.   Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.

Future of Gas: Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.

Cadent manages the national gas emergency service free phone line on behalf of the gas industry - 0800 111 999*
