Lattice Group merges with National Grid Group to form National Grid Transco plc, the UK’s largest utility business.

Billions of pounds invested to improve the safety and reliability of the gas supply network by replacing cast iron mains with polyethylene (PE) pipes. All metal pipes that lie within 30 metres of a property to be renewed. New installation processes for PE pipes are joined together by a heat fusion process, a virtually jointless system is possible. Reducing leakage through old mechanical joints.

Launch of 30-year, nationwide gas mains replacement programme.

Further expansion in the US sees the Company merge with New York State utility Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation. The business becomes a subsidiary of National Grid USA.


National Grid sells four of its eight regional gas distribution networks.

National Grid Transco changes its name to National Grid.

2006 – 2007

National Grid continues its growth in the US, with the acquisitions of the Rhode Island gas distribution network and the KeySpan Corporation.


Introduction of ‘smart’ domestic gas meters.


First renewable gas production site is connected to the NTS.
