- Cadent staff joined millions around the globe to mark World Alzheimer’s Day
- Events included bake-off, abseiling and virtual reality dementia experience
- Cadent is also committed to becoming a Dementia Friendly Utility
Employees of Britain’s largest gas distribution company Cadent joined millions around the globe to mark World Alzheimer’s Day recently.
Staff took part in assorted events to raise both money and awareness at Cadent offices and depots across the country.
Activities included employees at the firm’s Coventry hub taking part in a virtual reality experience designed to give them some insight into the experiences of those with dementia.
Dementia awareness training sessions were also provided to employees – many of whom will encounter those affected by dementia as they go about their work.
A samosa sale was also held to benefit Cadent’s official charity the Alzheimer’s Society. Colleagues at the company’s Hinckley offices also participated in the fundraising with a raffle.
Employees in the North West rolled up their sleeves, gathered ingredients and got out their cookbooks for a Bake-Off challenge.
Cadent Corporate Social Responsibility Advisor Laura Barnes explained: “Dementia is one of the biggest challenges that we as a society face.
“By supporting World Alzheimer’s Day Cadent is able to raise both money and also awareness both of which can help.”
Cadent is now in its second year of partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society, which became the company’s official charity in 2017.
As part of the partnership Cadent has pledged to become a dementia friendly utility.
Laura explained: “As Britain’s biggest gas distribution network our staff come into contact with many people affected by dementia as they go about their daily work keeping people connected to safe and reliable gas supplies.
“In partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society we’re delivering Dementia Friends training sessions to our staff at all levels. This helps ensure that all aspects of our operations help support both those with dementia and those caring for someone who has dementia.”
Earlier this year employees marked Cupcake Day 2018 with four weeks of bake-off activities. The event raised £2350 adding to the impressive £58.8K haul that was raised during the first year of the Alzheimer’s Society being Cadent’s official charity.
Other things Cadent is doing to assist those with dementia include providing free lockable cooker valves – these enables carers to isolate the gas supply to cookers when they are not there.
