▪ Work will keep gas flowing to local homes and businesses for decades
▪ Temporary traffic management needed while work is under way
Essential work is under way in Nottingham’s New Basford area to upgrade gas mains and keep gas flowing to homes and businesses until the end of the century.
National Grid is renewing more than half a kilometre of gas mains in the Radford Road and North Gate area. The existing iron mains are being replaced with tough new plastic pipes that will last for at least 80 years.
To enable engineers to carry out the work safely, the following temporary traffic management measures will need to be in place fromnext week (week commencing 13 February) for up to four weeks:
- On Monday and Tuesday (13 and 14 February) there will be temporary traffic lights in North Gate, near to the junction of Rawson Street for preparatory work for the gas mains renewal in North Gate. The traffic lights will be manned throughout the day, including morning and evening rush hour. The junction of Rawson Street and North Gate will be closed. A road closure in North Gate may be required after Tuesday, once the mains replacement is fully under way. National Grid will keep people updated about this.
- Temporary traffic lights will be needed on Radford Road. These are expected to be installed towards the middle or end of next week. To reduce disruption these will be manned from 7am to 6pm every day.
- The gas mains are also being renewed in Eland Road and the existing road closure will remain in place.
Local businesses will remain open as usual.
National Grid Authorising Engineer Paul Patrick said: “This essential work will secure safe and reliable gas supplies for local homes and businesses for decades to come. It is part of a nationwide programme to futureproof the nation’s gas network.
“We are sorry for any inconvenience caused but it is important that we replace these gas mains. Once the new plastic pipe is in the ground it will last for decades and require little or no maintenance. Every effort will be made to complete the work as quickly as possible and to minimise the disruption.”
The work is part of an ongoing programme to renew gas mains in New Basford. The programme is due to be finished in June. Details of further works will be available over the coming months.
