Spring may be on the way but a National Grid scheme to revamp gas mains will keep Wolverhampton residents warm for decades of winters to come.
Starting next month (April) National Grid will be renewing more than 1km of gas mains in Wolverhampton. Ageing iron mains will be replaced with tough new plastic pipes that will last for at least 80 years.
Work will start in Newhampton Road West on 3 April for 14 weeks, followed by Bradmore Road on 10 April, also for 14 weeks. To keep staff and road-users safe while the work is under way temporary lights and temporary road closures will be needed on both projects.
Stephen Murray, Head of Contract, said: “National Grid plays a vital role in keeping people warm. We are investing millions of pounds every year in renewing the West Midlands’ gas mains so that local residents and businesses can continue to enjoy a safe and reliable gas supply for decades to come.
“We appreciate this work may be disruptive. We’d urge people to bear with us while we carry out these essential projects. We’ll do all we can to finish this work as soon as possible and minimise disruption to residents, businesses and motorists.”
In Newhampton Road West there will be rolling temporary traffic lights, which will be moved down the road as each section of gas main is renewed. When the work reaches the junctions of Riches Street, Hunter Street and Clifford Street both junctions with Newhampton Road West will be closed while engineers renew the pipes.
During the Bradmore Road scheme there will be rolling temporary traffic lights as work progresses along the road and there will be major works at the following junctions:
- Starting on 10 April for eight weeks, Birches Barn Road and Broad Lane at the junction of Trysull Road / Bradmore Road will be closed and there will be temporary traffic lights at the junction of Trysull Road / Bradmore Road
- From 2 – 26 June there will be temporary traffic lights at the junction of Merridale Road and Finchfield Road
- From 26 June to 10 July there will be temporary traffic lights at the junction of Merridale Road, Gamesfield Green and Aspen Way
