• Essential work to replace old metal mains with modern plastic pipes
• Work will take 14 weeks but pipes will last for around 80 years
• Project will make sure people of Leyland continue to have a safe and reliable gas supply
National Grid engineers are to replace over 600 metres of gas main in Leyland, with work starting on Monday 20th June and scheduled to take around 14 weeks to complete.
The work will see old metal mains which are nearing the end of their useful life replaced with modern plastic mains which are designers to last around 80 years once buried in the ground.
During the work, a one way closure will be in place on School Lane between its junction with Chatsworth Road and Hough Lane for around three weeks.
Once work on School Lane in complete, a one way closure will be put in place on Hough Lane from the junction of School Lane and Towngate to the junction of Churchill Way and Turpin Green Lane while engineers renew the main on Hough Lane. The final phase of the project will see Turpin Green Lane closed while a new section of gas main is laid across the road.
Stephen Murray, Head of Contract for National Grid said: “We hope that people will be patient with us during our work. We’ll be doing all we can to speed up the job, including putting the new plastic pipe inside the old metal one where we can, to reduce the number of holes in the road we have to dig. We know that it will cause delays for motorists travelling through this part of the town centre but we would ask them to bear with us.
“There will be disruption in the short-term, but the long-term benefit will be a safe and reliable gas supply for the people of Leyland for generations to come.”
