- New year sees next phase start of 10-month gas upgrade project in Wolverhampton
- Part of Cadent’s £65 million investment in new gas pipes for the West Midlands
- Lane closures and parking space restrictions in Worcester Street
The New Year is set to ring in the next phase of a major engineering project to replace 1.5kms of ageing gas pipes in Wolverhampton’s Worcester Street.
Starting on 7 January, local gas network Cadent will be upgrading old iron gas pipes in Worcester Street, between Cleveland Street and Pitt Street. This phase of the work is expected to take one month and once it is complete, engineers will start replacing the gas pipes further down Worcester Street, towards Little Brickkiln Street.
Cadent will keep people updated. The work is part of a 10-month project, due to be completed in May, to renew iron gas mains in Worcester Street. [For details of each phase of work leading up to May, please see 'Notes to Editors' below]
The iron gas pipes, thought to have been laid in the 19
th Century, will be replaced with tough new plastic ones that will last at least 80 years. The work will mean local homes and businesses can continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies to heat their homes and power their businesses for decades to come.
To keep staff and motorists safe while the work is underway the following traffic management restrictions will be in place:
- Parking space restrictions and lane closures
- No left turn for HGVs and buses from Pitt Street to Worcester Street (northbound)
Craig Horrocks, who heads up Cadent’s gas mains replacement project in the West Midlands, said: “We would like to thank people for bearing with us – we greatly appreciate their patience and understanding during this essential work.
“This is a complex project and as a result of a number of engineering complications, the project is due to be completed in May and not March as originally anticipated. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.
“Every effort is being made to complete the work as soon as possible. Local shops and businesses will continue to remain open as usual throughout all our works.
“This work will ensure that local homes and businesses continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies for many decades to come. It is part of an ongoing programme to update Wolverhampton’s gas network and is part of a £65 million investment we’re making in the West Midlands gas network this year.”
Cadent has planned the work very carefully with the City of Wolverhampton Highways to make sure the project is delivered with as little disruption as possible.
Letters are being sent to every property directed affected and customer teams will go door-to-door to discuss the work with business owners and residents.
Cadent’s customer services team will keep local people updated as the project progresses. If anyone has any enquiries about this work they should contact Cadent’s customer services team
