- Cadent engineers to deliver next phase of essential gas mains upgrade in Canonbury Road in early 2019
- Traffic management including the closure of Canonbury Grove will be required to carry out the work
- The project will help ensure historic Canonbury district has the infrastructure it needs to thrive in the 21st century
The New Year will see Cadent continue its work to give ageing gas mains in Islington’s historic Canonbury district a 21st century refit.
The latest phase of the project which involved replacing ageing gas mains with tough new pipes along Canonbury Road, between the junctions with Alwyne Lane and Alwyne Villas, was recently completed.
Engineers are now preparing to start work on the next phase of the project which will involve replacing gas mains on Canonbury Road between the junctions with Halton Road and Essex Road and also in Canonbury Grove.
Canonbury Grove will be closed to enable the work to be carried out and some parking bays will also need to be temporarily suspended. Alwyne Villas may also need to be closed during this phase of work.
The work is due to start in on Monday 7 January and is scheduled for completion in April 2019.
A signed diversion will be in place for through traffic and local access will be maintained throughout the work.
Additional work in the area is also planned for 2019 work to replace gas equipment in Canonbury Square scheduled for between March and June 2019. Additional gas mains replacement work is also planned for Canonbury Square with dates expected to be confirmed in the near future.

Cadent Construction Manager Stuart Donaldson said: “Cadent will continue to have a presence in the area into 2019 as we continue our essential work to replace ageing gas mains.
“I’d like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding so far and to reassure them that we’ll continue to do all we can to deliver this essential work with as little disruption to them as possible.”
Cadent is inserting the new gas pipes into the old mains wherever possible as this means fewer large scale excavations need to be dug, which minimises inconvenience to the public.
Mr Donaldson added: “Upgrading the local gas network will both help ensure people stay connected to safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating while also reducing the risk of disruption caused by gas escapes from ageing pipes.”
The project represents an exciting new chapter in the history of an area which boasts some impressive literary credentials. Authors George Orwell and Evelyn Waugh were onetime residents of Canonbury Square. Novelist Charles Dickens meanwhile set one of his Christmas stories ‘The Lamplighter’ in nearby Canonbury Tower, while novelist Jane Austen’s ancestors are also said to have lived in the area.

This work is part of Cadent’s ongoing investment in replacing and upgrading ageing gas mains in its North London network with safer and more durable modern pipes. This programme will reduce the amount of unplanned repair work to ageing gas pipes on the network and is an essential in helping to ensure people keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies.
