What we do in the Gas Industry

What we do

We manage the national gas emergency service free phone line on behalf of the gas industry - 0800 111 999*.

We also work with other companies to ensure that gas is available where and when it's needed.

All gas in the UK passes through National Grid's national transmission system on its way to consumers.

In the UK, gas leaves the transmission system and enters the distribution networks at high pressure. It is then transported through a number of reducing pressure tiers until it is finally delivered to consumers.

There are eight regional distribution networks, four of which are owned by Cadent. Gas is owned by your gas supplier and Cadent is responsible for this gas whilst it is being transported.

Our UK distribution networks deliver gas to around 11 million consumers.

What we don't do

We don’t produce gas.

We don’t own the gas that flows through our pipes. We only transport the gas through our pipeline networks.

We don’t repair gas appliances.

We don’t send out gas bills.

You do not pay your gas bill to us.

About Gas

What are the main functions of the UK gas industry?

  • Production and importation – gas comes from offshore fields in the North and Irish seas. It’s also brought over from Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands via three interconnector pipes and imported in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
  • Transmission – National Grid is the sole owner and operator of gas transmission infrastructure in the UK. Gas producers supply gas to our national transmission system (NTS) through reception terminals.
  • Distribution – gas leaves the NTS at 49 points across the UK.
  • Supply – whichever gas supplier they choose, gas is delivered to most consumers’ premises through a pipe belonging to the local distribution network.

Guaranteed standards of performance

The standards of performance that Ofgem requires and compensation payments you are entitled to receive where we fail to meet these standards.

Domestic connections

You can apply online for a Gas Connection, Alteration & Disconnection. There are eight simple steps to getting the work done.

Biomethane Gas Injections

We help create new connections to our gas distribution network that enable sustainable gas producers to inject their renewable gas into the pipeline and grid network.

Working safely near our assets

There are a number of precautions you should take to avoid damaging our pipelines and reduce the risk to people's health and safety.

A culture of innovation in everything we do

Working with colleagues and technology partners, our innovation team take new ideas from lightbulb moments, through trials to everyday implementation; focusing on solutions that are safe, reliable and improve the customer experience.

The future role of gas

Today’s gas network is sophisticated, resilient and versatile. We want to make it even more flexible because the way we use the gas network in future will be different from how we use it today.
