▪ National Grid begins vital gas mains replacement project
▪ Gas mains to be replaced in London Road, Peddars Lane, St Marys Road and Homefield Avenue, Beccles
▪ Project will help keep safe and reliable gas supplies flowing for cooking and heating
The dawning of 2017 sees the beginning of a new era for Beccles gas mains network.
This week engineers started work replacing over 1km of ageing gas mains in the town.
Existing gas mains which are nearing the end of their operational life will be replaced with tough new pipes in London Road, Peddars Lane, St Mary’s Road and Homefield Avenue. This essential work will help ensure local residents keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating.
To carry out the work safely and efficiently traffic management measures are being implemented including the following (Dates may be subject to change):
Ongoing until the end of January 2017
Multiway traffic lights at the crossing of London Road with St. Mary’s Road and Peddars Lane.
Two and three way traffic lights at junctions on St. Mary’s Road and London Road.
Wednesday 25 January 2017 to Monday 20 February 2017
A lane closure on Peddars Lane with one way traffic towards Blyburgate and two way traffic lights at either side of the junction with Peddars Lane in Blyburgate.
A road closure at the exit of Alexandra Road to Peddars Lane at one stage which will then shift to the other end of Alexandra Road at the next stage.
Wednesday 22 February 2017 to Monday 13 March 2017
Multi-way traffic lights at the junction of Ringsfield Road with St. Mary’s Road.
Monday 13 March 2017 to Monday 27 March 2017
Road Closure at the junction of Ashman’s Road with London Road.
The work is currently scheduled to be completed in April 2017.
Project Supervisor Jason Drinkwater said: “This vital project will help make sure that residents and businesses in Beccles keep on enjoying a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come.
“We’re sorry for any inconvenience our work may cause and we’ll do all we can to minimise disruption and complete the work as quickly as possible.”
The project will also involve replacing gas service pipes to some properties. To do this engineers will need to temporarily disconnect the gas supplies to the properties involved. National Grid will contact those properties involved to arrange access.
All National Grid engineers carry official identity cards, which people should ask to see before allowing them on their property. To verify an engineer’s identity or for any enquiries about the project people should contact National Grid’s customer services team on 0800 096 5678.
