- Football teams to battle it out for honours
- Employees go the extra mile in nationwide campaign
- Sports quiz and games help raise money for charities
National Grid employees in Hinckley and Leicester dusted down their sporting credentials for another herculean effort in aid of Sport Relief.
Throughout the day they huffed and puffed as they tackled various sporting challenges to raise money for the charity.
But the big match is this evening when football fever hits Leicester. And it’s not the heroics of the Premier title chasing Foxes that will draw the crowds.
It’s a crunch match between rival National Grid teams.
National Grid East Midlands Operations will take on a side this evening of fellow employees from Customer Operations in Hinckley.
No doubt the game will be toughly fought until the final whistle sounds at the Riverside Ground in Braunstone.
Sally Clay, National Grid organiser, said: “National Grid teams have long supported Sport Relief and our efforts this year were exceptional. People have given up their own time to ensure successful fund raising. As always, they have gone the extra mile to help those less fortunate. We are all winners and we’re expecting a bumper sum to be banked for a wonderful cause.”
But, the real winners from today’s events are the hundreds of UK charities, and millions of people around the world, helped by Sport Relief.
Apart from the “Big Match” National Grid staff organised a sports quiz, a cake bake-off, a pool competition, magnetic darts and wear-your-team-kit-to-work for a £1.
For the more energetic there was table tennis, badminton, basketball and volleyball.
To help make Internet donations easier, for the first time National Grid volunteers set up virtual ‘Just giving’ pages.
