▪ Work will ensure local people continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating
▪ Lane closure will be needed so work can be carried out safely
Monday (22 August) will see the start of a gas mains upgrade in Burton-upon-Trent that will keep supplies flowing to the town until the end of the century.
National Grid will be renewing more than 700 metres of gas pipes in the A511 Ashby Road. The work is expected to take six weeks.
The existing iron mains will be replaced with tough, hardwearing new plastic pipes that will last for at least 80 years and will need little maintenance.
The work is being carried out in two phases. To safeguard staff and road-users, traffic management measures will be necessary.
During phase one, there will be a lane closure, eastbound, on Ashby Road, between its junctions with the A444 Stapenhill Road and High Bank Road. A diversion route will be in place. Access to homes and businesses will be available via the diversion route. Westbound traffic will not be affected by the work.
During the second phase of the work, temporary traffic lights may be installed between number 14 Ashby Road and the junction of Mervyn Road, from 9 September, if they are required. The traffic lights will be moved down the road as each new section of gas main is installed.
National Grid Authorising Engineer Paul Patrick said: “Our job is to connect people to the energy supplies they need. This essential work will ensure we can continue to provide safe and reliable gas supplies to businesses and residents for decades to come.
"We appreciate this is a main route into Burton-upon-Trent. We will make every effort to reduce disruption to local people and complete the work as quickly as we can. This will include working over the weekends, over the August Bank Holiday and extended hours during weekdays.”
Businesses will remain open as usual and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
