In late November engineers will start essential work on Chelsea Embankment to replace old gas mains with tough new pipes that will keep Londoners connected to safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating.
Work is scheduled to start on Sunday 26 November and is currently expected to be completed in mid-April 2018.
To make sure there is enough space to do the work and ensure the safety of the public and engineers Chelsea Embankment will be closed to westbound traffic from 10pm on Sunday 26 November until work is completed. Thames Tideway will also be carrying out work in the area. Their work is scheduled to take three months and will be done under the same road closure as Cadent’s work to minimise disruption. A signed diversion will be in place via Chelsea Bridge Road, Lower Sloane Street and Sloane Street then back onto the Transport for London Road Network (TLRN) at Knightsbridge.
To ease congestion, Transport for London (TfL) will make changes to traffic light signal timings with enforcement officers will be on the ground to enforce the temporary traffic changes. In addition to existing CCTV cameras, four temporary additional cameras will be in place to monitor the surrounding network.
Information regarding temporary changes to the 170 route (westbound only) and the 360 route will be available on tfl.gov.uk/bus, users of the 170 and 360 buses wanting updates on the changes to the services can also call Cadent on 0800 389 8261 or email info@communityrelations.co.uk
Local shops and businesses will remain open as usual during the project and local gas supplies should not be interrupted by the work.
Cadent Engineering Manager Stuart Donaldson said: “The gas mains we are replacing were laid when there was a lot less traffic on the road, however we’ve carefully designed this essential project to ensure there is as little impact as possible on the area.
“Coordinating the Cadent and Tideway work means an additional three-month road closure will not be needed
He added: “The new gas pipes will reduce the amount of unplanned repairs and maintenance needed on the gas network and the knock-on disruption that can cause for residents and road users.”
Earlier this month Cadent held a public exhibition about the gas mains replacement project, people can find out more information on the scheme by calling 0800 389 8261 or emailing
