▪ Lane and footpath closure currently in place in Howdens Hill, Scunthorpe
▪ Signed diversions directing pedestrians to use footpath on other side of road during the closure
▪ Work will help ensure local people keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating
Pedestrians are being urged not to put themselves at risk by walking in the road while engineers carry out essential repairs along a busy stretch of dual carriageway in Scunthorpe.
The lane and footpath closure have been implemented on the southbound side of Howdens Hill leading out of Scunthorpe town centre, to enable engineers to carry out vital repairs to the gas mains network.
The closures are needed to make sure the work is carried out safely and efficiently and are currently expected to remain in place until March 17 2017.
Signs advising pedestrians and motorists of the closures are in place, however National Grid Network Supervisor Repair Phil Chesters explained: “We’ve had reports of people putting themselves at risk by walking in the road where there is even less space than usual due to the lane closure.
“It’s very important that pedestrians stay safe by using the footpath on the other side as instructed to do so by our signs while these closures are in place. We’re aware that this may cause some inconvenience but it’s very important people do this and observe and adhere to the signs we’ve put up to help ensure their own safety.”
He added: “The repairs we’re carrying out are essential and will help ensure local people keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating.
“The excavation and repair are very complex processes but we’re doing all we can to complete the work as safely and quickly as possible.”
