▪ Road closures in Marsh Wall and East Ferry Road from Monday 27 March for an estimated five weeks to enable essential gas mains upgrade
▪ Diversions will be in place via Limeharbour, East Ferry Road and Manchester Road
▪ Project will help keep safe and reliable gas supplies flowing for cooking and heating into the future
Engineers will soon be starting the latest phase of work to upgrade gas mains in Tower Hamlets.
The project involves work to modernise the existing gas mains network in Marsh Wall in the Docklands area of Tower Hamlets. The essential work will help ensure the network can continue to cope with demand and keep local people connected to safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating.
Work is due to start on Monday 27 March and is currently scheduled to last five weeks.
To enable the work to be carried out safely and efficiently the following traffic management will be in place:
Road closures
Marsh Wall will be closed between the junctions with Limeharbour and Manchester Road. A bus stop at this location will also be suspended. Access to Lime House Close will only be available on the junction with Manchester Road side of Marsh Wall.
East Ferry Road will be closed between the junctions with Manchester Road and Glengall Grove.
Diversions
Signed diversions will be in place via Limeharbour, East Ferry Road and Manchester Road.
All shops and businesses will remain open as usual.
The work has been planned in close discussion with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and Transport for London to ensure it is delivered with as little inconvenience as possible. It will not affect any customer gas supplies.
National Grid Authorising Engineer Michael Morris said: “This essential work will help ensure local homes, schools and businesses keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies.
“It will also reduce the amount of unplanned repair jobs we have to do on ageing gas pipes which will reduce disruption in the area as well as help London to maintain its status as a leading 21st century city.”
He added: “We’ll keep on talking with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and Transport for London to make sure the work is delivered with minimal disruption.”
The project is part of National Grid’s £1 billion investment to replace and upgrade the London gas supply network which provides a safe and reliable gas supply to more than two million customers.
